About Us - Eero'S. classic Jawa's etc., mopeds and scooters

Eero'S. classic Jawa's etc., mopeds and scooters is a labor of love born out of a deep appreciation for vintage two-wheelers. Our journey began with moped rides in Norhern Karelia and in Tavasteland deep in Hame. Then in Vantaa and Helsinki, Finland, where we discovered the joy of restoring mopeds and maintaining scooters. With a keen eye for detail and a commitment to preserving the nostalgia of classic bikes, we have honed our skills in moped restoration, scooter maintenance, and sourcing vintage bike parts. Our dedication to our craft and our community of like-minded enthusiasts sets us apart in the world of classic motorcycle hobbyists.

Here on this hobby page we tell about: the Legendary and Famous...

1) Part1. STORY OF JAWA MOTORCYCLES: The Pre wars and Most Popular Models.

Jawa motorcycles were founded in 1929 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, by engineer František Janeček, who combined his name with the German Wanderer brand to create "JAWA"[2][3][4]. The company quickly gained a reputation for innovation and reliability, introducing models like the lightweight Jawa 175 in 1932, which became a bestseller in Czechoslovakia[1][3][4]. Throughout the 1930s, Jawa focused on developing its own engines and participated in international racing events, helping to establish its engineering excellence and global appeal[1][3][4].

After World War II, Jawa became one of the most prominent motorcycle manufacturers in the Eastern Bloc, exporting its rugged and affordable two-stroke motorcycles—especially the 250cc and 350cc models—to over 120 countries[2][4][5]. The company achieved major racing successes in motocross and enduro during the 1960s and 1970s, and its simple, robust designs made Jawa bikes legendary for their durability. Despite a decline after 1990, the Jawa name continues today, symbolizing a rich legacy of Czech engineering and motorcycling heritage[2][4][5].

2) Part2. JAWA and CZ MERGER and Post WW2-era.

The nationalization of Jawa in 1948, as Czechoslovakia came under communist control, had a profound influence on the company’s motorcycle design and production strategies. With the state now directing industrial priorities, Jawa was merged with CZ to form Jawa-CZ, and its focus shifted toward producing reliable, affordable, and simple motorcycles suited for mass production and export, particularly to other Eastern Bloc and developing countries. This meant that innovation was often balanced with the need for robust, uncomplicated designs that could be easily maintained and repaired in diverse conditions, leading to the global success of models like the two-stroke 250cc and 350cc bikes[1][3][4].

However, nationalization also imposed constraints. The centrally planned economy and guaranteed export markets reduced the incentive for rapid innovation or experimentation with new models. While Jawa did attempt to modernize and improve performance—especially in the 1970s and 1980s with models like the 634 and 638—its main strategy remained focused on durability and simplicity rather than cutting-edge technology, especially as Western and Japanese competitors advanced. This approach secured Jawa’s reputation for ruggedness and reliability but eventually made it harder to compete as global motorcycle design standards evolved[2][3][4].

3) Part3. Modern day JAWA - A mix of East and West technology.

Yes, genuine Jawa motorcycles are still made in the Czech Republic. The company **JAWA Moto spol. s r.o.**, based in Týnec nad Sázavou, continues to research, develop, and manufacture motorcycles, their spare parts, and accessories in the Czech Republic[1][2][5][6]. The production includes both traditional two-stroke models like the Jawa 350/640 and modern four-stroke models such as the Jawa 350 OHC, which uses a Chinese engine but is assembled and finished in the Czech factory to meet European standards[5][6].

Jawa motorcycles made in India under license (by Classic Legends) are a separate product line and are not the same as the Czech-made Jawas, although some Indian models are now also imported and sold in Europe under the Jawa name[2][5]. The Czech factory produces several thousand motorcycles per year, focusing especially on the classic 350cc models that are popular in Central and South America, as well as in the Czech Republic itself[5][6].
